  • Monitor Skype & Face Time carefully – Video conferencing is a common bandwidth hog. Be sure to quit Skype completely –  Skype can be using bandwidth even when you are not using it.
  • Cut back on video downloads. Video files (Youtube, Hulu, Netflix) are by far the largest gobs of data downloaded by the average user.
  • Decrease the resolution of Videos. Various providers allow users to select various options before starting a download such as ‘best’, ‘better’ or ‘good’ quality. A ‘good’ quality download my be more than adequate for display on a small computer screen and may be only one-seventh the size of the ‘best’ quality.  YouTube allows users choose the resolution for some videos, as just a single hour of a HD movie might be as large as 2 or 3 gigabytes.

  • Take control of video ads. Many Web sites have video advertisements that start streaming and playing straight away chewing up your bandwidth, without you initiating the upload. A number of browser tools can temporarily block Flash content, and other videos embedded into Web pages. See: Banish Video Ads »
  • Watch your online backups. Automatic backup services are great because they upload your data to a remote server. However you need to thing very carefully about what and how often you need these backups. Likewise you may not need to repeatedly back up all the draft version of the final document, especially if it contains High quality images.
  • Music Streaming – Think carefully about cloud music services (Spotify, Pandora, etc.) and similar integration packages between PC, laptop, Pads and phones. Do some research on what this will cost you in terms of your gigabyte allowance. Streaming music services also consume a lot of bandwidth.
  • Size your photos appropriately: Share photos carefully considering their size, and don’t send your whole collection to friends. Full-size images from digital cameras can be very large. Consider using compression versions and only send the high quality ones if your recipient really wants them. Use hi-resolution images if you are sending to a printing service, but  there is no need to upload hi-resolution images to Facebook, each digital photo upload can be 2 – 4 MB.     After you’ve logged into your Netflix account, just go into https://account.netflix.com/HdToggle and select from one of three options.

    • “Good quality” at up to .3 GB per hour
    • “Better quality” at up to .7 GB per hour
    • “Best” at up to 1GB per hour or up to 2.3GB/hr for HD

    If you’re a heavy Netflix and data user, downgrading your Netflix stream could help prevent fees for overages on your bill.
