Even dialing in on a perfectly clean noise free line, a 56Kbps modem usually will not connect above 53Kbps, even 50Kbps connection can be rare. Generally if you are anywhere between 42Kbps and 48Kbps, you are doing pretty well.

The modem upon encountering noise, will adjust itself to connect at a lower, more stable speed as a means of keeping the connection intact. It will adjust down until it reaches a speed that it can maintain your connection. The more line noise you have on your line, the slower your connection speed will be.

Simply put, your modem cannot detect a dial tone on your phone line. This usually means there is no dial tone on your phone line, the phone cable may possibly be damaged or bad or disconnected, or there is a problem with your modem.

Check the following:
-Connect a regular phone to the wall jack your modem connects to, and see if there is dialtone. If not, you will need to contact your Local Phone Company.
-Make sure the phone cable between your modem and your phones wall jack is secure.
-Make sure the correct COM PORT is selected in your modem
-Make sure your modem driver is installed, re-install modem driver if neccessary.
-Try replacing the existing phone cable.

Telephone line quality and distance from the telephone company central office are some factors that affect how fast your connection through any Internet Service Provider will be.

Generally, people experiencing connection problems have intermittent issues. Often this is caused by noise on your telephone line, especially in rural areas. More commonly due to intermittant bursts of noise.

Line noise can enter your phone system from a number of places.

-You may want to replace the phone cord to see if that helps.

-Call Waiting : If you have call waiting, this can sometimes be the culprit. If you are online when another call is coming in you will sometimes be bumped offline. You can configure your connection to temporarily disable the call waiting while you are online, by adding a *70 to the beginning of your dial-up access number.

-Try dialing in at a slower modem speed to increase the stability of your connection.

This is an Authentication Error.
The Error Message may read one of the following :
"The computer you're dialing in to cannot establish a dial-up networking connection" or "Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain"

Simply put, you will want to check the username and password for the account you are using.
